Food & Tea Restaurant @ Berjaya Times Square

Actually on the opening night of Transformers, we went down to Berjaya Times Square. We very happilly proceeded to IMAX to get our tickets on the tenth floor then we came back down to the 3rd floor where most of the eateries are located in Times Square.

This place is so huge, we didn't want to risk getting lost in this enourmous shopping is huge, I mean someone can really get lost in this place. We saw Food & Tea, Hei Foon Dei (Happy Land), and thought hey maybe we try HK cuisine.

The only other Food & Tea outlet I have been to was the one in Taman Segar, outside of Leisure Mall. Used to go there often because that outlet allows smoking in their premises. But this one at Berjaya Times Square, I thought was a bit different.

It nicely renovated, with nice red chairs, comfy, their premise was brightly lit and so forth. Their staff was very attentive too. By the time we sat down, someone attended to us.

The surprise came in the menu, they have a new one. A SET MENU, to entice us to order more at a better VALUE. I as usual, lazy to decided just opted for a SET. It definitely works very to have a set menu , when your customers do not know what they like or are new to your premise.

My set was Pork Chop Cheese Baked Rice in Red and White Sauce ( Yin Yong ), it came with soup of the day and a scoop of ice cream. All that for only RM11.90.

Crabmeat Soup ( if not mistaken)

Mushroom Soup

Cheese Baked Riced with Pork Chop

Pork Chop Baked Rice in Red and White Sauce ( Yin Yong )

The dishes offered were just simply delightful. I mean it makes you hoi wai.... Its not something special or exotic, but its just fried rice, baked in a bowl with Spaghetti Sauce and Some kinda Mushroom sauce. Although simple, it was tasty, and easy to swallow.

They serve pretty good Cham Ice ( Tea/Coffee) . Their coffee here is quite nice too. If not mistaken they also have a few more outlets in some other shopping complexes. If you don't know what to order, here is what you should get over there, TRY their Cheese Baked Rice. It will come in various combinations of sauces, I still haven't tried all of them yet, but in general, they all should taste quite good wan.

I never liked their Nissin Noodles, in my heart, its just Maggi Mee Soup with a piece of spam and an egg in it. Then they charge you bloody 6-8 bucks for Maggi Mee.

Also try their Coffee and Cham Ice. They also have quite a selection of smoothies, and drinks with really weird colors. Some are lime green, some are sky blue and the list actually goes on.

To summise, I think it is quite an okay place to eat. Look out for the thumbs up ( Chef's Recommendation) on the MENU. Confirm won't disappoint you.

Restoran Wing Heong, Seremban

It was one of those weekends, where you know you are going to be fatter, last weekend was one of those. Sure fat wan. I was told that we will be attending Sayang's relative's birthday celebrations, they are asking us to go for lunch in Seremban.

Does Wing Heong Restaurant from Seremban ring a bell to anyone ? Nope, not to me either. Although this place is not well known to KL guys like me, I am sure they have quite a reputation with the Seremban people. We just expected a simple lunch to celebrate Sayang's Grand Aunties b'day, but instead they decided to cook up a very delightful 10 course lunch for their guests.

So join me, as I try to recall the dishes on the menu which overwhelmed our taste buds. Excuse the pics though, as I lost my camera during the Penang trip, so have to make do with a 2MP Phone Camera instead.

Very unsual, but the first course was, Loke Yuk Sau Meen ( Venison Long Noodles). It was a brithday celebration as such they serve Long Noodles, even the vegetables are long symbolically to wish Sayang's Grand Auntie a long life. The noodles were very nicely done.

The second serving came, an Assorted platter of appetizers. Unlike the usual 4 seasons platter which we are so acustomed to in KL Restaurants, theirs came in a tower. I also noticed something, they no longer put fire or candles onto this platters , instead they put in little devices which emits flashing lights (like feng tau lights ). The top level appetizer was somekinda fish ball wrapped in bacon. It is really something different from the usual, the fish gives you that very healthy bite, until the juices flushes into your mouth, and combines it with the sweetness of the bacon... wuaaaa... Jieng !! Ichiban..

The one on the left is a fusion of Squid/Sotong Jelly wrapped with Vegetarian Abalone and Chicken. The one on the right is Steamed Prawns covered with Mash Potatoes sprinkled with Finely diced fried Garlic.

Below the picture shows the fourth appetizer, mixed herbal something something...

We were very impressed by the tower, very very uncommon. Then came the soup. Its somekind of seaweed seafood soup which was served individually. Yummy !! Very hoi wai already.

This dish is Stirfried Fish with Mixed Vegetables, with Deep Fried Bones ( really nice ) and Macadamia Nuts.

This duck dish comes with a surprise package. When the waiter put this dish on the table, I must say, someone got turned off. Aiyo got duck dish means they wont serve any Chicken. Very true, but then the hosts, for some reason decided that, they won't be buying us a normal lunch, it was going to be something different.

This duck was stuffed with Good Stuff inside. The chefs here did a good job in preparing this dish. The ingredients must have been special too. This duck did not have the usual smelly duck smell that comes with all duck meat. Even sayang, whom is not a very big duck Fan, agrees. No duck Smell wo !!! She helped herself to one or two more pieces of duck than usual.

The prawn dish came. It was prepared in quite the usual way, the simple way. Ching Jing Prawns but they add garlic oil after the they steamed it. Prawns were fresh and the size was average.

They served two vege dish. One of them is Stir Fried Kai Choi ( dunno what it is in English) and the other one , I call this the Lo Hon Zai dish. Standard vege dish lor.

Of course, when you have birthday celebrations, we always end up eating the birthday cake right ? The hosts baked their own Sugee Cakes. She must have spent an entire day baking those cakes for this party.

To sum up, this place really just looks like the normal Chinese Restaurant, with Air Cond. On a normal day, if I drive past this place I wouldn't go in and try on my own. I am not sure if their normal food stuff is ok or not, but after we kena this special 10 course lunch, I must salute these guys. Definitely will come back when we have the chance.

They managed to impress us with their food. Yat Low ah !!! Two Thumbs up. We had a long drive back and everybody was just happy with their food although 10 courses was a bit too much to eat for Sayang's parents. But then because the food was so good, how to resist ?

As you can see, no exotic dishes were served in this lunch. Exotic ? What I meant was, the menu did not have real abalones, no Buddha jump Over Wall dishes, Lobster Dishes, or Ikan Kelah dishes served. Instead, this restaurant just turned very simple ingredients like fish ( dunno wat fish , ahahaa), duck, chicken and vegetables into dished that will satisfy even the most fussy taste buds.

So how do we get there ?
I am not sure if I can go back there again, but I will try to make this as simple as possible. After you reach Seremban town, look for signs to go to Rasah Town ( Seremban's satellite town). The road to Rasah, is also the road that leads you to PD. After you passed Rasah Town, Jalan Tok Ungku ( formerly Loop Road) is on a turnoff on the left. Wing Heong is just by the roadside on the right hand side.

Sri Kembangan Spicy Pork Noodles

I was a little bit bored of the food around my office and decided to head on to Sri Kembangan, town center. Decided to park my car near the market, just behind the main road, Jalan Besar (of Sri Kembangan) near the MCA Office. Directly opposite the MCA Office is the market itself and a coffeeshop that sells, Claypot Chicken Rice, and Pork Noodles.

What caught my eye, was that sign , Spicy Pork Noodle.

So I walked to that lady, and asked, whats spicy pork noodle ah ? She answered, Ma Lat Chee Yuk Fan... oh... ok I will have one bowl please....

The bowl arrived in less than 5 minutes, apparently this place somehow do not attract the crowds because it is not on the main road, and yet it's not so difficult to find. The cili padi she put there really made me sweat buckets. Hahahaha... it was so bad, I finished one packet of tissue paper. A bit too hot, and next time I come back , will definitely ask her not to put so much Cili Padi.

Taste wise, it tastes like any other Pork Noodles, except that it comes in a spicy broth. Good stuff for cili lovers.

How do you get there ? Come into Sri Kembangan, along Jalan Besar. Drive past KFC (on your right), and reach a traffic lights junction. Turn Right, you should see some multipurpose/community hall on your left, drive up the lane and you will come to the area where this yellow building is located. Park your car here or nearby and walk directly opposite the yellow building.

So this lady also serves Claypot Chicken Rice, Dim Sum and Pao. I don't remember seeing an Economy Rice booth in this coffeeshop, but I really do not mine trying any shop's economy rice here. The people in this area are generally above average cooks. I ordered White Coffee and I thought it tasted pretty decent.

Not sure if anyone has written about this place before. So no links for this post.

Toptaste Prawn Mee/Hokkien Mee @ Sin Kim Sun Kopitiam

This is the very much talked about Hokkien Mee in town. In the previous visit here, we had to come by a second time, because we came to this place at night, not knowing Toptaste opens only during the day.

Their stall is different. The front of the stall is pasted with newspaper articles about their food. They have been over covered, but what the heck, cover them again... hahaha....

This trip round, I made it a point to come back for breakfast. I reached this place by about 9am. The breakfast crowd had already left for work, while I was left with many dirty tables, full of prawn mee bowls. This must mean everyone is here to eat the prawn mee. A quick look around, I notice 7 tables, all has a prawn mee bowl on them. Business must be brisk.

I walked up to the stall, its manned by the lady and her foreign helper guy ( who speaks Hokkien already). I wonder why she asked me, add what ?(SOP meh to add stuff ?) I pointed at the weird looking praying mantis prawn ( I think thats what it is) , she acknowledged, " Herr Ko !!", then I nodded. Not bad, nowadays we can communicate to Penang people in Cantonese, but we get a reply back in Hokkien... muahahahaha....

The noodles came, with a jumbo serving of Mantis Prawns. Yummy !!! The soup here is not as thick as the ones compared with Ho Yee Kee, Kepong but it is spicy because of the additional chilli and very very sweet (prawn kinda sweet). Really can't make out why their Prawn Mee tastes so nice... perhaps Oldtown Chefs should come over here and find out how to improve their prawn mees.

I also ordered the old uncles CKT in the same kopitiam. It looks very authentically Penang CKT, but then the taste is just normal. The Myanmmar fella who fries CKT in Pandan Perdana I thought could come up with something nicer than this old man. But I noticed something different about Penang CKT fellas. All of them got quick hand movement when it comes to wielding their Wok Chan ( their wands). Unfortunately for me, not all of them can create magic, like the Red Hat Auntie in Lorong Selamat. Maybe we should call the Char Koay Teo in Lorong Selamat as Linux Char Koay Teo, because the auntie wears a RedHat... wakakakaka....

Ok, I got a very good shot of the location of this Kopitiam. I am standing at the intersection of Mcallister Rd, and Rangoon Rd. In the background is the UMNO building, and yes this place is in the vicinity of the UMNO building. If you are walking just walk towards the UMNO building and try find McAllister Road. Then ask around for directions to Sin Kim Sun Kopitiam.

I came back the next day to have one more bowl of Hokkien Mee, before I headed back to KL...

the BSG blog is interesting as they actually go around and test the same food, at different locations and they try to come up with a winner. Definitely interesting to read and see where they have been to.

Ayam Goreng Belacan , Kimberly Street, Penang

Since I missed the RPM class , so I decided to walk around looking for food, in other words, Jalan jalan, cari makan. I asked one very stupid question, where can I find food ah ? The recept replied, oh !!! you in Penang , food no problem. Walk this way, you will see Penang Rd... Ok so I walked that way reached Penang Road, I saw Odeon cinema, now showing: Sivaji !!... crossed my mind that maybe I should go watch a movie that night but no la... I think go cari makan better.

So Jalan along Penang Road, suddenly can see one road cordoned off, cars not allow to enter all. Then I saw a sign, Pasar Malam everynight, Medan Lebuh Campbell . So I thought ok la, Pasar Malam sure a lot of stalls... mana tau tarak !!!

Walk here there everywhere, suddenly I walked down Chintra Street, which then leads down to Kimberly Street. At the junction I saw this Belacan Fried Chicken Stall. I asked the stall owner, so if I buy from you can go into that food court and eat or not ? He said can , so I bought one piece from him.

One piece of chicken, only RM1.60... it was hot and cripsy when he handed it to me. It smelt like Fried Chicken, not really like that superb or something like that la. Then I took one bite, fuiyoh..... I don't know what to say.. .. it tasted like Fried Chicken, but then the Belacan taste comes in subtly after. Very clever this guy, the Belacan smell not very strong which was why I didn't smell it while he was frying, but instead it comes in after you bite.. Hmm... really nice !!

Thats the place I went to, to eat my Fried Chicken. Ordered a glass of Kopi C.. yucks!!! It tasted like terrible coffee.

I also ordered, Prawn Mee at the place, pictured below. Standard Penang practice, to save one saucer they dump all the chili on your spoon for you to mix it up. Not all Penang Prawn tasted very nice, and this stalls falls into that not so nice category. While I was eating that prawn mee, I was thinking to myself.... The Kepong Ho Yee Kee Prawn Mee, definitely better than this guys Prawn Mee....

Prawn Mee Looks Good Only, but tastes so so sahaja...

Penang Char Koay Teo @ Lorong Selamat

I had a long day today, and was looking forward to checking into the Hotel, before making my way to FF Penang for 7pm RPM class. Unfortunately for me, I have a problem, I don't know the roads in Penang well. So while looking for my hotel, I managed to find Lorong Selamat, so I thought since I might not find this place again tomorrow, I go tapao first la.

Which stall is this ? One Auntie's stall who is opposite the Koptiam Above.

In case you were asking, yes this one has 3 big prawns in it, and she charges RM5.50 for each CKT serving. I didn't dare to ask whats the 6.50 and 7.50 ones are for. I must say, it was pretty good CKT, and I just noticed something different about Penang CKT style of cooking. Its cooked on a Coal Stove, instead of a Gas Stove in KL.

There you go, the finishing touch , and I must have solved the code as to why Penang CKT tastes so good. You need kung fu for this and its captured on Film... The Hand must move fast enough to spread the Kuay Teo evenly on the hot wok, so that they can cook evenly..... wakakakaka....

On a more serious note, I have also received an email asking for a boycott of some coffeeshop in Lorong Selamat, for charging 50sen to patrons who don't order drinks in their kopitiam. The movement was started by Oliviasy.Net.

I've been to this Kopitiam also, nothing good to order from here, and the CKT is from the stalls outside of the restaurant. If you want to boycott the kopitiam, TAPAO la like me.. hehehe...

HomeMade Burgers

After tasting this Azim fellas burger at TTDI, I was so disappointed with the way the burger came out I told myself, make my own wan, see whose burger tastes better. So finally last Saturday , I went buy all the stuff after a quick search on google, I clicked on Cooks.com recipe place went through a few recipes and went of to buy the ingredients.

It was 7.7.7that day , so I wanted to do something abit more special la, like try to make burger all. So here's what they suggested we get, Minced Meat, Worchestershire Sauce, Salt, and Onions. So simple only wo... so I decided to get some stuff lor.

Before I left for the Pasar Besar in Cheras, behind KL Velodrome (white elephant now), I told myself , go get Minced Lamb, and Minced Pork la... can't make beef burgers, coz Sayang can't eat em.

I walked the entire Pasar Besar Cheras, guess what ? I saw only 1 Mutton Stall, 1 Beef Stall, and about 10 Pork Stalls ( separate area). I managed to buy my Minced Pork, but Minced Lamb ah, sorry la.... they don't have lamb here, mutton saja ada.

So next stop, Giant Taman Connaught. I managed to get minced mutton, spam, chicken frankfurter and corriander ( I thought I could introduce a little more herby aroma to the mutton) from here.

Quickly rushed home to start putting in the ingredients for Marinating The Burger.

600g Minced Pork
Minced Mutton 420g ( about 1 lb)
Worchestershir Sauce ( LP or French ), One Onion , Big ( Finely Diced), Corriander
Chicken Frankfurter 100g
Spam, I used half of that (about 150g)

Okay lets start with the Pork Burger first

Take Half Onion ( finely diced)
150g Chicken Frankfurter
200g SPAM (mash it)
400g Minced Pork
3 Tablespoons Worchestershire Sauce
2 pinches of Corriander
1 Teaspoon Salt

Mix all the ingredients, and put into a bag, and leave it to marinate for a few hours , I left mine for one day. For Mutton Burger Patty, use the same thing, except you don't mix in the spam, and the frankfurter.

Hari yang seterusnya.....

Its D Day. Time to find out if your burger is nice or not. I was abit nervous to say the least, but can't wait to get the burgers cooked. So we chosed to cook the mutton patty first. Okay so now we need to add a bit more stuff. Notice that burger below, breaking up ? Thats because we forgot to put in one egg, and to mix it up together with breadcrumbs. According to Cooks.com, kalau tak ada breadcrumb, you can use Cracker Crisps ( like Jacobs lo, mash em up and mix it together with the patty). Grab a handful of the patty , shape it into a burger. If the meat feels like it doesn't want to stick, add 2 teaspoons of corn starch to a handful of meat patty. By now it should stick.

Heat up your saucer pan, and put in two tablespoons Olive Oil. Lower the heat so that your meat patties can cook slowly without burning them. It took us three tries before the third mutton burger stayed together in one piece.

While cooking the mutton burger, you might want to add on some White Pepper, Black Pepper , Soya Sauce to add a little bit more taste to the patty, otherwise it might turn out to be quite flat.

We went on to do the same thing for the pork burger. The only difference it that since I added SPAM which is already salted, I didn't add more soya sauce la, or more salt la.

Sayang had bought some Salads the night before at Cold Storage Bangsar. Its not like I am advertising for CS, but we actually bought some really nice tomatos, big, juicy and firm. The salad pack, cost us about 4.99 ( it says serves 3-4 persons) and we bought 3 tomatoes which because it tasted so good hor, the tomato finished first.

From those portions, we made: 3 Mutton Burgers, 5 Pork Burgers, and 2 Mutton/Pork Mixed Burgers. Bought 6 buns, Salads for 4 persons, and 3 tomatoes. I think that was just enough to serve 6 persons in my family. I also wanted to make Potato Wedges with Sour Cream in the beginning, but we didn't have time for it.

Definitely first time making em patties, and I must say, its quite simple to cook up. Since then I found out that Mr Ho's also sells them minced mutton, not sure they have minced lamb also. I must say my burgers definitely tasted a million times better than Azims... so now I know why they sell them for RM12 each....

Look, I found a recipe for Pork Burgers here

Spices of Malaysia - @ The Mines Shopping Fair

Claypot Chicken Rice & Double Boiled Soup Stall

Everyone's always on the go during lunch time, and food courts are just the place to provide us with a quick economical refuelling before we head on back to work. If you work in or near a shopping complex, you will be at times spoiled for choices, don't know where/what to eat (ie MidValley).

Anyway, one of those days I had to stop by at Mines Shopping Fair to look at some Computer parts I needed for work, and was pleasantly surprised that the once gloomy, and 15 years ago looking Foodcourt had been renovated, and it also has been given a name, Spices of Malaysia. It used to look like a hawker center, whoa, now it looks just a world apart.

This is not the first I have been here, and everytime I come here, I always end up ordering from one stall, that sells Claypot Chicken Rice and Double Boiled Herbal Soup ( Dan Thong).

The newly renovated Food Court Entrance

Claypot Chicken Rice ( can add eggs, salted fish, etc)

Chicken Herbal Soup

Their menu, check out the simple soups and herbal soups, very cheap.

The first time I ate at this stall, I have tried their Sizzling Noodles on HotPlate, not sure if they still serve it, and found them to make good noodles. I also ordered a bowl of soup too, for just RM4.50 for a bowl of Herbal Chicken Soup, you just can go very wrong can you ?

Alright I managed to flick this photo from the Mines Website that still lists S&M Foodcourt as their tenant. That was how it used to look like, stalls putting their stands all over the place. Lighting was inappropriate ( looked like Amusement Center right? ) . Now, definitely much better and the air conditioning also enough power.

I tried to find other Blog Reviews but can't. There are other stalls, and one of those Malay mixed rice stalls caught my eye. Will come back more often now.

Oh ya, there is ample parking at the Shopping Complex, unless there is an Event going on at the MICCCC ( their convention center, forgot how many Cs liao). But of course, you can always park at the MICCCC, there should be enough parking lots for all, unlike MidValley.

Azim Burger Shack @ TTDI

After a friend showed me the Friedchillies video titled, Best Burger in Town, it made me so excited about this place, I practically went down there and dragged sayang together with me the very next day. Gian already ma !

This place is located at the Medan Selara @ TTDI, Jln Burhanuddin Helmi. Opposite one of my more favoured place, Penang Mali. It wasn't very crowded for a Medan Selera , which started me on my suspicions. Why this place not crowded ?

Anyways we got ourselves seated, and shortly after, a waitress came by and put a two page spread menu infront of us and went off to attend to her chores. Sayang ordered her Chicken Burger, I ordered a Double Cheese Burger. I remembered that I had ordered the additional Mushroom Sauce, but it didn't come.

Look here is the catch. Have you seen the Friedchillies Video ? The one that talked about best burger in town ... If you haven't , don't bother. Why ? The burger they shot in the video is definitely different from the burger I ate. In the video, Azim was shown in a short interview saying, his burger is made simple, cooked simple, and he puts in only the best salads (then he puts in one big piece of perfect Lettuce !) So ? Look at my picture below. Served totally different. Hidden in the lettuce, you could find one small piece of pickle and a slice of tomato.

Taste wise ? The burger had no taste in it.... Everything was done wrong. Taste like what ? It tasted as if the beef patty was marinated with just Black Pepper and Salt. I mean to say , everything tasted so wrong man. Or was it that day , Azim's burgers were off form, accidentally put too much black pepper ? Lets give the burger joint the benefit of th doubt then.

Secondly, there wasn't even any French Fries that came with the burger. The whole serving for a Burger should at least come accompanied by Fries and Salad. Unless you are charging Rm3 like OTAI and RAMLY, I got nothing to say la.... Azim charges an exorbitant RM 12 for that burger. Oh ya and if you want you can add their so called " Special Mushroom Sauce" for RM1(I ordered but didn't come, my loss I suppose !) .

My Burger.... Look at the Serving !!

My burger topless !!

The not so fabulous Chicken Burger

Our Cincau Bandung Drinks (from another stall)

If you wanted to get a decent burger, which tastes good and all, try Chilli's and Friday's burgers. For something abit more economical, I'd take a drive down to Burger King , for their Whopper. The street burger stands are OK la, but they are not in the league of Burger King, or Chili's.

Anyway my BEST burger in TOWN comes from Chili's and Fridays. Will review them someday soon.

For a WHOA !! This burger is so nice review, please on click this links:

I told myself that I am not going back to this place again...

Restoran Tu-Long, MidValley (The Boulevard)

La Mian... anyone ?

If you crave for noodles which are hand made, and served in various types of soups, and stews, this is the place for you. It was recommended by my cousin who is a close friend of the owner. MY FM DJ, Lam something. If you tune into the morning show of MYFM, he is the one half of the equivalent of JJ & Rudy on Hitz.

When we arrived at the entrance, I had a feeling that this place was going to be pricey. Why ? Nice decor, very traditional-ish looking wall papers which make me feel like I was transported back to China.

Even the lady who greeted us, spoke in Mandarin with a heavy Chinese Accent. We got seated and immediately the menu was put on the table. Unfortunately for me, although I look like AhPek, but I could not understand any Mandarin.. , so here I go, minus one point for hiring mandarin speaking only, waiteress. English also kenot... cis !!

Ok, after checking the menu , the pricing is quite ok. Noodles from RM12 - 20.

Hmm... they serves noodles of course, and I remember dim sum. We ordered our normal Ching Tong la mian, and also a Szechuan Soup La Mian. To me the la mian was no big deal, although you can watch the leng chai pull em noodles. The noodles preparation is downstairs, separated from the tables by just a clear window.

Other than requiring one fella to prepare (pull) the noodles, the soups were already pre made.

My Szechuan Soup La Mian
Ching Tong La MianDurian Tarts

One dish that really caught my attention was the fact that they had Durian Tarts on the menu. So without thinking too much we ordered it. I will give them an A for putting those Durian Tarts on the menu, but it didn't taste very good. Maybe durian not in season so, it tasted quite flat...

Overall, I must say the place has got a nice environment. I gives you the feeling that you are dining in a posh place, although the pricing of the food is moderately high, but still affordable. If you are not picky on how your La Mian should be like, then you will enjoy dining at this place. The owners really spent quite a bit on decorating this place.
