Ipoh Rd Yong Tao Foo

I think the names gives it away, that Ipoh Rd YTF is somewhere along Jalan Ipoh. Its true some years back, but it has since moved from somewhere along 3rd Mile Jln Ipoh into this new Segambut bungalow which they have spent quite a bit of monies refurbishing, a few years ago. Hence, a change in location but the name stays.

It was a Sunday afternoon and the entire family was wandering around Kepong searching for a suitable place to have lunch. My in Laws are small eaters and has very healthy eating habits. They usually don't take a lot of red meat, and would like to eat in places that do not add a lot of MSG into their food.

Therefore, we eat at home quite abit... because it can be really difficult to find low MSG food in cafes, and restaurants nowadays, that still tastes good.

Surprisingly, one of those restaurant that they do not mind going to is this Ipoh Road Yong Tao Foo. I wouldn't exactly say their YTF does not contain MSG, but it does contain a lot of Soya, Vegetable and lots of fish.

One of the main attraction about this Ipoh Rd YTF is that everything comes out FAST. Just tick down the items you want to add to your YTF bowl, the food normally comes in within 7 minutes.

You know the part about the MSG and stuff, I think this place has begun putting in more MSG into their YTF, and I find it very tasty. I don't know how to explain it, but this place makes Ampang Rd YTF, just like any other YTF seller. Their food is quite good, although the way they make their fish paste ( YTF filling ) differs from Ampang's, some may still prefer the original recipe. The recipe can differ in terms of how much fish to meat ratio you mix into your paste, as well as what herbs, and seasoning is used.

I noticed that at Ipoh Rd, they now also sell Paper Wrapped Chicken ( Chi Pau Kai). Made famous originally by Sungai Besi's Yong Tao Foo sellers like Leong Ya, Ipoh Rd also put this item on their menu. Curious how it would taste, we ordered two pieces. My recommendation, if you wanna taste a real good paper wrapped chicken go to Leong Ya, or Leong Ya Indah @ Sungai Besi.

Ampang TYF @ Orchard View, Ampang

Usually I won't drive all the way down to the old Ampang Village area just to get some YTF. But that day I was picking up some stuff for work, and thought it might be nice to actually eat some YTF in the real place itself. Even though some might say Orchard View is not the original shop that served YTF, but they do look the most organized.

This lady is preparing Sui Kao - for frying / soup. You know they are good when they openly prepare their YTF infront of you. It means you get them fresh, and hot.

The kitchen staff busy frying those sui kaos, and yong tao foos. This place is very organized. They have a system for , sending food out from the kitchen, and a system to validate your order when you pay. These fellas should actually document their system and patent it. Its like they run everything with a SOP in mind.

Thats what I ordered, a 10 piece assorted platter of YTF (in other words 10 kin cham cham, lol). What can I say, their fish paste is quite alright, really can't find anything to complain about the. You can tell that their YTF is cooked twice, once cooked in hot water (kukus) and then fried to give you a crunchier texture when you bite into them. Another plus is that, their YTF do not fall apart when you bite into them. Wonder why...

Their Fried Sui Kao, is another item on their menu that is a crowd favorite. After seeing how they mass produce their sui kaos, I also didn't wanna lose out, ordered 2 pieces . The skin of the sui kao was crunchy, and hot. The temptation to bite into them and wait for the juices to flow into your mouth is there, but please becareful, the sui kao's veli hot, and might scald your gums if you are not careful.

Orchard View's Fried Sui Kao is like McDonald's French Fries . Get the metaphor ?
Always hot, always crunchy, and always fresh...

Note: my favorite YTF is still the kind they call Hakka YTF, where the fish paste has a little salted fish in them. Another thing to look out for when eating YTF is their sweet sauce and their chilli sauce. I think both of these came out quite nice at Orchard View.

Restoran Leong Ya @ Taman Sungai Besi Indah

Remember my last post on Yong Tao Foo ? Wasn't that long ago isn't it ? Restoran Leong Ya , is famous perhaps for 2 dishes... their Yong Tao Foo and Paper Wrapped Chicken. Sometimes because I eat too much... I have to cut down of carbs & red Meat, I will come over to Leong Ya just to eat their Yong Tao Foo , without rice for lunch. Its also good to sometimes try to lower down Carb intake... kekeke

There are 3 Leong Ya's in the vicinity of Taman Sungai Besi Indah. This one belongs to the daughter, opposite of Azhar Maju Mamak. I must say this Leong Ya is the most packed during lunch and dinner, and yet I couldn't find a single blog review of this place... You should be able to see in the map below the Leong Ya (in black) and Leong Ya in Yellow. There should be another Leong Ya somewhere in the front, with air cond.

The way they serve their YTF is slightly different from the ones in Ampang. The sweet sauce is served together, and their chili sauce is slightly different from the Ampang YTF that most people are accustomed to.

Unlike Ampang Homeland(got factory to make YTF), these 3 Leong Yas make their own YTF individually. So you might have to sample YTF and Chee Pau Kai ( paper wrapped chicken) in all three branches.

Also try their other dishes. I personally like their Vietnamese Seafood Pot , and they also know how to steam fish ( results always better than average). Prices are reasonable too. Sorry no pics for those dishes, but definitely worth the try.

Ampang Homeland Yong Tau Foo

Ampang Homeland Yong Tau Foo @ Sunway

The old Ampang town, is synonymous with Yong Tau Foo. So for most of us, we just take it for granted that the best YTF must come from Ampang. So I hope this post will make you think differently.

We were on one of our road trips after visiting SisInLaw (was pregnant ) in Sunway, so decided to pop by that area to look for something nice to eat. We saw the main food court near Pyramid...nah no parking .. we saw some Mamaks... nah... also spotted a few small cafes, but one restaurant caught our eye, as we rolled our vehicle down that street. Ampang Homeland YTF !!! So we found a parking spot ( note: Finding a spot to park your car can be tricky )

This place really different. Its brightly lit, its chairs and tables are similar to those you find in those standard kopitiams ( decent la). The menu lain sikit. Here they don't sell you YTF by the piece, like most of them do. It comes in a set of minimum 5 pieces. Of course on the menu they also serve Assam fish, Pandan Chicken, Sui Kao ( soup dumplings) , Lettuce in Oyster Sauce, Pork Leg Vinegar , etc....

Being a mass produced piece of YTF, how good do you think it can get ? The servings are definitely getting smaller and smaller these days. Must be because of inflation, and a million other excuses they can find la. Taste wise I think they are ok. I mean its not bad at all, can pass... The restaurant is nicely decorated, it looks clean, you don have flys bugging your food and the service was quite adequate. I think all in all this place is not bad after all.

They serve pretty big pieces of sui kao. The clear soup has a lot of ajinomoto too. I know some people who loves their dumplings and soup. Hehehhe, I am not one of them.

Our choice for the better YTF is the Jalan Ipoh Yong Tau Foo.

So I assume this Ampang Homeland Branch : Sunway should/ by right taste the same as the others. I am not sure. But all the rest of the bloggers actually made the pilgrimage to Old Town Ampang to taste the real deal. Perhaps I should also go try, hmm !! the last time I ate there was actually some 7-8 years ago. But I recently drove past the place and found the place to have very terrible parking problems, and to get there , you will have to go through a terrific jam.
